А как насчет недопустимости “cruel and unusual punishment”?

Listen up, Kemi. Here are the dazzling policies that will win you the next election

Reform has already benefited from my political genius. Now it’s the Tories’ turn – and I’ve got just the manifesto to help
Back in March, I wrote a column containing a modest proposal for Nigel Farage. Reform, I suggested, should pledge that if it wins the next election, all small-boat migrants will be accommodated in constituencies that have voted Green. Well, Mr Farage must be an avid reader of my columns, because, mere weeks later, Reform actually announced this as official party policy.

Like any responsible journalist, however, I believe passionately in the importance of political balance. Which is why I have now decided to offer my dazzling genius as a political thinker to the Tories, as well.

Of course, the Tories may reply that they’ve got quite enough ideas of their own, thank you. At her party’s conference this week, Kemi Badenoch announced a range of eye-catching policies – such as scrapping Labour’s mansion tax, halving the tax on hiring young workers, and creating a “Britannia Shield” anti-missile defence system.

With all due modesty, though, I believe that my ideas would be even more popular with Right-minded voters…
1

Cut taxes for everyone – except Left-wing celebrities. Their taxes should be increased by at least 90 per cent. They definitely won’t object, given they tend to be extremely vocal in their support of high taxes. And so, being as principled as they are selfless, they’ll happily pay up.
2

Tax cuts will however be offered to celebrities who are openly Right-wing – just as a little experiment, to see whether there actually are any celebrities these days who are Right-wing. Or who are at least willing to risk instant cancellation in cultural circles, purely to get their tax bill down.
3

Police to be banned from describing terrorism suspects using the term “British national”, because the public invariably responds by rolling its eyes and muttering: “So, someone who wasn’t born in Britain, then. Either tell us which country they were born in, or use a more accurate phrase, such as, ‘Foreigner who’s been given a piece of paper by the Home Office, clearly very unwisely.’”
4

To raise national morale, the inventor of the tethered bottle cap will be taken on a tour of every city, town and village in Britain, so that long-suffering members of the public can pelt him with rotten fruit – in revenge for all the times that his infuriating innovation has left their clothes stained with splodges of fruit smoothie.
5

Supermarkets to be banned from sacking staff for tackling shoplifters. Instead, all such staff to be awarded a pay rise, a medal and immediate elevation to the Cabinet.
6
Millions of pounds to be poured into a major nationwide campaign to bring back the words “May I have” instead of “Can I get”.
7

Before being permitted to visit London, all foreign tourists will be made to pass a rigorous exam, requiring them to demonstrate that a) they can walk at a speed greater than two miles a fortnight, b) they know which side to stand on a Tube station escalator, and c) they understand key English phrases they’re likely to hear in London, eg “Get out of my way, you waddling Belgian halfwit.”
8

Public floggings for all railway passengers who allow their toddlers to watch children’s TV on their iPads, at maximum volume, without earphones.
9

All bluebottles to be equipped with sat nav, Google Maps, or whatever else it takes to help the useless buzzing dunces exit a wide-open kitchen window.
10

Mandatory hard-drive checks for all Left-wing men who put “he/him” in their social-media bios.
11

All websites that sell stuff will be legally required to make clear, before purchase, which delivery firm they use, so that you can tell in advance whether there’s a cat in hell’s chance of your order ever actually arriving, rather than being broken or stolen by a member of staff at the delivery firm’s warehouse.
12

All wives to be given compulsory lessons in how to stack a dishwasher properly.
13

Meanwhile, all husbands to be reminded never to criticise the way their wife stacks the dishwasher, or they won’t be husbands for much longer.
14

All countries that demand reparations for the slave trade to be issued with a formal apology – as follows: “We are very sorry that, in light of the welfare policies pursued by British governments over recent years, you have formed the impression that our country is run by gormless mugs who will hand out vast sums of taxpayers’ money to almost literally anyone, no matter how spurious the reasons. Obviously that impression is correct, but we’ve finally decided to draw the line, so kindly get knotted. Thanks.”

Trump says Iran should ‘take out’ LA with a nuclear bomb

California governor calls the president ‘deranged and dangerous’ after remarks at Nebraska rally
Donald Trump appeared to suggest that Iran should “take out” Los Angeles with a nuclear weapon.

The US president’s comments prompted condemnation from Californian politicians, including Gavin Newsom, the California governor, who labelled him “deranged and dangerous”.

Speaking at a rally in Nebraska, where he was campaigning before November’s midterms, Mr Trump defended the Iran war for “keeping the world safe” by preventing the regime from obtaining a nuclear weapon.

“They could take out a city. Let them take – Let them take out Los Angeles. Let them take out San Diego,” he said, prompting cheers from the crowd.

Referring to fuel prices, which have soared since the outbreak of war on Feb 28, the president continued: “This is a very small price to pay. And it’s going to be over with very soon. It’s essentially almost over with.

“And they might keep going a little long – you know, they always say they have a big threshold for pain. They need it, let me tell you.”

Mr Trump faces losing control of Congress in November’s midterms, amid widespread discontent over inflation and rising fuel prices.

As of Tuesday, gasoline costs $4.37 a gallon, up from $3.13 a year ago, while diesel stands at $6.32 a gallon, compared with $6.38 a year ago, according to American Automobile Association data.

Mr Newsom, who is seen as a likely contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028, said in response: “Donald Trump is now saying our foreign enemies should ‘take out’ Los Angeles and San Diego.

“He is deranged and dangerous.”

Karen Bass, the Los Angeles mayor, accused Mr Trump of making “irresponsible threats” and endangering residents.

“The President of the United States suggested that a foreign government attack Los Angeles. His statements against our city are dangerous and could potentially compromise our safety,” she said.

“The role of a president is to protect the country, not to actively threaten it and encourage attacks on American lives.”

“San Diego is not collateral damage. We are not expendable. And we are never a ‘small price to pay’,” said Todd Gloria, the city’s mayor. “Keep our city out of your reckless war talk.”

It's only been... okay, I don't want to think how long.

We are preparing to take the beta update page and the beta inbox out of beta with the next code release. We don't have an exact date yet, but this is your last chance to tell us about problems!

To enable the beta versions: go to Beta Features and enable the "new Create Entries" beta test for the new update page and the "New Inbox Page" for the, well, new inbox page.

If this is your first time using the beta update page: nearly everything on it can be adjusted, moved, or removed to some degree. The upper right side of the update form has a " ⚙️ Rearrange Panels" link.

Not every panel is enabled by default! If you don't see something you're used to finding, look in the disabled panels. While in Rearrange mode, you can enable or disable panels, drag them to whatever position you want, and generally customize it to your heart's content.

Once we push the button and switch to the new update and inbox pages for everyone, we cannot keep the old ones available. We are so close to finishing the decade-long "get rid of the undocumented custom templating language from 1996 that no one else uses" modernization project that's been sapping our collective will to live that we can taste it, and we can't convert the old update page and the updated inbox page is the converted version. This is your last chance to alert us of problems. If you let us know after the switch goes live, we'll still fix it, but we can't guarantee how fast. Prevent future problems and test drive them now!

Ту страну, которую Рейган называл “shining city on a hill”.

Hi all,

I had to push some code live today to fix something, and that brought with it a couple of new things like if you have two-factor authentication (2FA/MFA) enabled, you got automatically logged out and it is now required to log in. If you don't, you can set it up if you want (you don't have to.)

This also means that if you have 2FA enabled, you will not be able to use 3P clients using your username and password anymore. You should be able to use API keys in most cases, but there's some nuance to that (and tbh, I just am not precisely sure what clients anybody even uses.)

Please do comment if you're seeing anything weird, as per usual, and we'll work on it. Thank you!

Iranian small boat migrants charged over Yom Kippur terror plot

Men accused of preparing acts against Manchester’s Jewish community on anniversary of synagogue attack
Two Iranian small boat migrants have been charged with plotting a terrorist attack against the Jewish community in Manchester.

Salam Ahmadyan, 36 and Rahman Salehi, 34, were arrested by counter-terrorism police in Manchester on Sept 20, the day before Yom Kippur, which is the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

The men, who came to Britain illegally, have been charged with engaging in conduct in preparation for terrorist acts, and will appear at Westminster magistrates’ court on Saturday.

It is alleged that the two men, one of whom was based in Salford, the other in Liverpool, were in contact with an overseas third party who may be in Iran in relation to the plot.

There were fears that any alleged plot may have been timed to coincide with the anniversary of last year’s terror attack at Heaton Park synagogue, in which two worshippers died.

Shabana Mahmood, the Home Secretary, said both men had come to Britain on small boats and Britain faced “serious threats from the Iranian regime”.

She said: “The fact both suspects arrived by small boat several years ago is a reminder of the importance of our relentless work to tackle illegal migration into this country. While numbers are down, I know there is more we must do.”

Ms Mahmood added: “Two suspects have been charged with planning a terrorist attack against Jewish communities in Manchester.

“This news will be deeply distressing for our Jewish communities, coming so soon after Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. I know this will be especially true in Manchester, as we mark one year since the terrorist attack at Heaton Park Synagogue.”

Mr Ahmadyan and Mr Salehi arrived in the UK as small boat migrants, one in 2020 and the other in 2023. One was granted asylum, while the other has a live asylum claim currently going through the system.

A Government spokesman said the Home Office was monitoring the criminal proceedings closely and would take any appropriate immigration action once they had concluded.

The men are accused of plotting to make a homemade improvised explosive device (IED) and also carrying out research and reconnaissance on potential targets. It is alleged they acquired documents, liquids, components and other equipment required in order to manufacture an IED.

Dept Asst Commissioner Vicki Evans, the senior national coordinator for counter terrorism policing (CTP), said: “These are extremely serious charges and allegations, and have come about from a joint CTP investigation, working closely with our partners in the security services.

“This investigation has led to the disruption of what we believe to have been a plot targeting the Jewish community in Manchester. I would like to reiterate that we do not believe there to be any ongoing threat to the public in relation to this matter, but as always, we would ask that people remain vigilant and contact police with any concerns.

“I’m aware that the news of this alleged plot coming during the High Holy day period has caused a great deal of concern to the Jewish community, as well as with the wider public.

“It also coincides with the anniversary of the devastating terrorist attack last year at Heaton Park synagogue and comes in a wider context of increasing anti-Semitic incidents across the UK, so we are very aware that this will likely increase what were already heightened concerns amongst the Jewish community.”

She added: “This week also brought into sharp focus some of the wider threats being projected into the UK from Iran. While this incident and the investigation into the RAF Fairford incident are not connected in any way, I want to reassure the public that CTP, working with our national security partners, are using the full range of our capabilities to protect the UK from any hostile acts.”

Greater Manchester Police Deputy Chief Constable Terry Woods said: “We know how concerning this news will be to Jewish communities in Greater Manchester, and beyond. We know this is particularly acute on the calendar anniversary of last year’s terrorist atrocity at the Heaton Park synagogue, and during the Jewish High Holy Days.

“We continue to work hand in glove locally with community leaders, the Community Security Trust, and our local policing teams, and nationally with Counter Terrorism Police London which have been leading this investigation.

“Our ongoing and robust policing plans within the Jewish communities will endure, and the public can expect to see continued visibility with officers providing engagement and security.”

So much for rogue agents, ха-ха.

Black Labs Matter’: How Labour dragged Britain’s favourite dog into the culture wars

Loyal? Gentle? Innocent? Don’t be fooled – the Government has finally exposed the four-legged far-Right threat at our feet

They have started to be called the “Furred Reich”, and not without good reason. Black labradors, that most innocent-looking creature, renowned until now for their loyalty, retrieval skills and ability to eat 17 packets of supermarket ham – packaging and all – in eight seconds, are in fact panting surrogates for a creeping fascist ideology. This news, delivered by Jenny Riddell-Carpenter, Labour’s nature minister, may come as an uneasy surprise to many dog owners out there, but it is the job of the Government to keep the public safe and aware of the dangers that live among, and with, us. “This is one of the things I do stay awake at night and fear,” Riddell-Carpenter said this week, as she announced Britain’s newest national-security threat. “I do believe that the next election is going to be fought on a battle line of nature and rural affairs. “It’ll be that warm ale, a black labrador by your feet in a pub that doesn’t exist, and with symbolism of fox hunting all around them. It’ll be a very far-Right nostalgic vision of Britain that we don’t want to have, [that] never really existed.” To think, all that time wringing our hands over XL bullies, but the real societal scourge was right before us, at our feet, patiently waiting for us to drop a Mini Cheddar. It’s always the ones you least suspect, but there they were: sleeper cells. Such sleepy cells, actually. Especially in front of a log fire. As the Labour Government decides whether or not to proscribe black labradors, some soul-searching has begun among us humans. All across the country, owners of these newfound four-legged fascists are questioning their companions. Some are, rightly, apologising for ever associating with them. Others, under the hashtag #BlackLabsMatter, are standing by their Hitlerite hounds. “Mea culpa,” confessed the author John Lewis-Stempel. “I had a black labrador when I was child. He was called Rover. We took him to the village pub. I am now voluntarily entering myself into a re-education camp.” "There he is again, pondering the invasion of Poland,” wrote historian Roger Moorhouse, alongside a photograph of his own despotic pet. Moorhouse appended a sceptical emoji, but as an eminent reader of Second World War-era Germany, he knows of what he speaks. “Nazis are now openly operating in our country completely unchallenged,” warned another man, bravely posting an image of two dogs, who weren’t even pretending not to be black labradors, begging for treats at the bar of a country pub. If the incident at RAF Fairford wasn’t enough to convince you that our rural corners have the capacity for domestic terrorism, here was proof, doe-eyed and beseeching. Naturally, AI came in handy for people to illustrate Riddell-Carpenter’s nightmares. Former MEP Annunziata Rees-Mogg recreated the bunker scene from Downfall, with the cast all made you-know-whos. Other videos and photographs showed black labs marching (a paw-test?) on Whitehall, smoking in pubs and reading Mein Kampf. Or at least, I think these were AI. Who knows anything these days? Black labs’ defenders have been many, of course. Nigel Farage proudly took his little neo-fascist fetcher out for a beer. So did hundreds of others online, who all refused to accept that their dog could be, well, as dogmatic as Riddell-Carpenter claimed. "Monty is the ultimate success story,” author John O’Donoghue started, telling the moving tale of his suspiciously patriotic pet. “He came from humble beginnings… Never knew his dad. Separated from his birth mother at an early age. Started life with nothing. Now he owns a house, two cars, and has a personal chef and chauffeur. Never give up on your dreams.” A third group has been left confused: where do other dogs sit on the political spectrum? With an image of her two mutts, a poster who describes herself as a “Yorkshire-dwelling sex realist” (is that a rare position?) wrote: “Our dark chocolate lab wondering if he’s just far-Right adjacent or an actual Nazi like his brother.” A dachshund owner commented that the breed was “feeling rather left out of the far-Right discourse”. For anybody lost as to their role in this particular front of the ongoing culture war, someone helpfully created a ranking of the most fascist dogs. It was bad news for owners of border collies, springer spaniels and Jack Russells. There are two black labradors, Hector and Digby, in my own family. The former, my parents’ in-house extremist, started life seeming as if he was possessed by the spirit of Satan himself. Without interference from Prevent or, failing that, a great many treats, a descent into fascist ideology felt inevitable – even before Riddell-Carpenter’s announcement. Meanwhile Digby, my brother’s agitant, was a milder puppy, but still capable of rampaging destruction, especially to his own bowels. They have both turned out well, calming to the point of being tolerable, and gaining good enough natures that they’ve almost become a pleasure to be around. When our children prod and poke them, they just sigh and walk off, knowing it’s worth putting up with for the debris that rains down from the highchair. Suffice to say, I now look at those two creatures quite differently. I was blind, but now I see – thanks to Jenny Riddell-Carpenter. To make things worse, Hector and Digby both spend large amounts of time in country pubs with their owners, who are supping cask ale. Clearly they must be dealt with, but how? It turns out I am not alone in this quandary. “This is my friend’s dog. How do I approach the conversation I need to have with her? It’s so hard,” Jill Collier asked, seeking advice on how to reach out and connect across the far-Right aisle. But there is an obvious answer, of course, and Richard Cullen, another author, reached it. “As a beer drinking Labrador owner I am horrified by this,” he wrote. “Who knew I was living a far-right fantasy. Consequently, I have now gone teetotal and had my Labrador put down.” It seems I need to broach my own difficult conversation in the family group chat. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/10/01/black-labrador-culture-wars-jenny-riddell-carpenter/ And this is the Labour minister who claims that black labradors are fascist:

Early release prisoners thank Burnham... and admit they’ll reoffend

Seven hundred offenders jailed for crimes including theft, violence and domestic abuse freed today

Prisoners released early by Andy Burnham on Thursday thanked the Prime Minister, but many predicted they would be back behind bars within weeks.

One leaving HMP Brixton in south London at 9am said he was “over the moon” after being freed a third of the way through his sentence. Asked if he had a message for the Prime Minister, he said: “Thank you mate, I appreciate it.”

However, another prisoner who was freed early from a sentence for theft admitted he had an “addiction to stealing” and was likely to be back in jail soon.

A third prisoner leaving HMP Durham said: “Justice system, what justice system? Thank you Andy Burnham,” as he walked free early, carrying his belongings in a white plastic bin bag.

The three were among the first tranche of 700 prisoners who were released after serving only a third of their sentences for offences including theft, assault, domestic abuse and fraud.
Another 3,800 will be released early over the next 10 months, including more serious offenders who were sentenced to spend more than a decade in jail.

Only those sentenced to fewer than 19 months were freed in the first wave as part of Labour’s efforts to avoid prisons running out of space.

Ministry of Justice (MoJ) figures show the number of spare places in men’s prisons has fallen to 1,134 out of 84,953 spaces left as of Monday, meaning they are running at nearly 99 per cent of capacity, with just 1.3 per cent of cells empty.
However, prison and probation watchdogs have warned the free space created by the early releases could be quickly eaten up by record rates of recalls as released prisoners breach their licences or reoffend.

David Elliott, one of 44 prisoners freed from HMP Brixton in south London, predicted he would soon be back behind bars, claiming that the early release scheme was “setting prisoners up to fail”.

The 50-year-old said he had been handed a 20-week sentence for stealing a pair of glasses from Selfridges. He was released after just seven, but said he needed help rather than being jailed and released early.
Tom, a habitual reoffender leaving Cardiff prison early from a sentence for burglary, said he had nowhere to go and “you cannot be homeless and sober at the same time”.

He predicted that of the 40 inmates released early from Cardiff on Thursday, “at least 10 to 15 will be back within a few weeks, minimum”.

The 32-year-old said: “If I had somewhere to live, half this s--- wouldn’t have happened. I’d happily spend my time in there, I mean, I’ve been doing it for 17 years.

“I’ll probably be back in the next month or two. It’s like a reset for me, this is. I get out, I take beer, drugs… go back in, put a bit of weight on, do it all again.”
Michael Bogle, a 38-year-old serial shoplifter who was freed after his “one-hundredth” conviction, said he would vote for Labour if he did vote after being released 78 days into a 32-week sentence, his fifth prison term.

A former bus driver, he said he would tell Mr Burnham to “keep the early release [scheme] going, it’s good”.

“Tagging is better than prison,” said Bogle, who was off to celebrate his freedom by buying “some kebabs”.

Niall Lynn, who was freed 30 weeks into an 18-month jail sentence from HMP Berwyn in North Wales, said there was less of a deterrent to not commit crimes.

“The sentences are super-lax now. You could kill someone and get out a few years later, no problem,” he said.

However, some of the freed prisoners echoed warnings by domestic abuse charities that “dangerous” offenders were also being freed early.

Dean, 37, who was released early from HMP Brixton from a jail term for theft, said “wronguns” were also being let out early.

“All the people who knocked their Mrs about shouldn’t be let out. I didn’t do anything like that,” he said.
Charlene Hefferman, who was waiting outside HMP Brixton to see her brother Rikki, who was released early from a year-long sentence after an argument with his partner, said: “You need to look into the people you are releasing. You are letting out people that are very dangerous.”

Jess Phillips, a minister for violence against women and girls, warned there would be “huge recalls” of domestic abusers to prison.

“I do think lots of domestic abusers are going to breach their licence, potentially on day one,” she said. “My experience of domestic abusers is that they try to contact their victims and children.”
The number of freed prisoners recalled to jail in the last 12 months was 51,419, the highest on record and double the number before the first emergency early-release scheme was introduced by the then Tory government in 2023.

MoJ figures show that in the last quarter for which reported figures are available, the number of offenders recalled to prison for breaching the terms of their licence overtook the number being released for the first time. One in seven (14 per cent) of all prisoners in England and Wales is now a recalled offender.

Nick Hardwick, a former chief inspector of prisons, said it was “very dubious about whether the measures they’ve taken will mean that the system doesn’t run out of space again”.

“The prison population is rising. All they’ve done is slow the rate of growth,” he added.
